1 - US News and World Report contributing editor Bonnie Erbe says:
The recession is driving American demand for contraception and for abortions. The media have been riven this past week with stories about the rising number of couples and single mothers doing the math and deciding this is no time to bring a child into the world....The media have also been rife with stories portraying this trend as something of a tragedy," she continues. "Let me propose a counter view: it is not.Her line of reasoning just gets worse from there.
2 - Then there is Cornell law prof Sherry Colb, writing in FindLaw Magazine. This one is really bad:
This argument, however, ignores one of the main premises of the right to abortion – the bodily-integrity interest of the pregnant woman. Particularly at the later stages of pregnancy, the right to abortion does not protect an interest in killing a fetus as such. What it protects instead is the woman's interest in not being physically, internally occupied by another creature against her will, the same interest that explains the right to use deadly force, if necessary, to stop a rapist. Though the fetus is innocent of any intentional wrongdoing and the rapist is not, the woman's interest in repelling an unwanted physical intrusion is quite similar. We need to make sure we are answering these poor arguments just as strongly.
