Our society is still too Politically Correct in many ways. Of course there is a place for civility and dialogue over and above conflict and arguments. But, we can't leave the truth or proper discourse out of the public square because we are fearful of offending another.
With that being said, there are some areas of society that still have a bit more freedom to take on issues and one of them is comedy. When comedy is done well, it can be edgy, but need not be mean or outright offensive. One of the best shows in the last 30 years to accomplish this was In Living Color. They did cross the line into offensive once in a while, but for the most part, it was just dang funny. They were especially good about racial issues, because they had a mostly African-American cast and production team.
